Langdon and Sophie had escaped from the bank unseen from the police. They sat in the back quietly, without moving until they felt the truck pick up speed and were aware that they were on the highway. They looked in the box and discovered that it did not hold a chalice, which was the commonly mistaken as the Holy Grail. They discovered that it held a criptex, which was an object that had a code of 5 letters that if you deciphered you would open the object to the secret that was written on papyrus paper inside. The criptex had vinegar on the inside so that if you tried to break open the criptext the vinegar would get all over the papyrus and before you could even read what the paper said it would dissolve. This was done by Da Vinci when he needed to send information and did not trust the messenger. Sophie's grandfather had made several on his own and given a few to Sophie in order to find her gifts on her birthday or Christmas. She could not eve begin to image what the 5 letter password could be but her grandfather told her when she was little that the clues were along the outside of the criptex and only those of intelligence could decipher the clues. The truck all of a sudden came to a stop and the man who was supposed to be helping them escape held a gun to their head and told them to give him the box seein as they had not choice they gave it to him but then smacked him in the head with the heavy metal doors grabbed the box and stole the truck. The man was left there with nothing in the middle of no where. Sophie and Langdon needed to find a place to hide out. Langdon suggested going to visit an old friend by the name of Sir Leigh Teabing who made it his life misson to find the Holy Grail. He had studied it his whole life and knew everything about it but could never find it. Sophie questioned whether he could be trusted by Langdon reassured her that he would help them so she gave in. They went to his castle and were let in. When they met with Sir Leigh they asked him to explain the Holy Grail so that Sophie would understand what it truly was. He began by explaining how the bible was written by man, not by God, and that Jesus was a mortal. He explained that the bible was written and rewritten over and over again and book were taken out and rewritten by Constantine. Constantine only was seen as a Christian, even though he was not, because it was benefical for him to be seen as a Christian in the political world. He tied this in to our visions on religion. Many people have derived their catholic beliefs from the pagans without being aware of it. The Holy Grail was commonly seen as the chalice that Jesus passed around to all his disciples, but when you examine Leonardo Da Vinci's painting of The Last Supper every apostle and Jesus has their own cups; therefore the image of the Holy Grail would be false. Sophie then asked then what is the Holy Grail? Sir Leigh's response was very shocking....He responded "not what but who?"
